I propose an Enlightenment "Ratchet-Effect" that could be fundamentally flawed if materialism and mechanistic progress are used to explain the origin of humans. This flaw is highlighted by the works of Thomas Nagel and Alvin Plantinga. Additionally, the physics supporting this criticism of materialistic non-teleology suggests that only nano-scaled organisms, such as single-celled organisms, can be the likely outcome. An alternative, non-Darwinian "Ratchet-Effect" might be responsible for the origin of species, driven not by survival but by consciousness. While mechanistic outcomes, such as bacteria and single-celled ecosystems, will persist in all environments, consciousness represents an observable outcome that can transcend the Darwinian "Mechanistic Ratchet Effect," leading towards higher levels of conscious experience of God and His Creation.

Like most here, I hold Hitch in pretty high regard. But I do think he does not fully take on board one very consequential angle. In his speech, he attempts to confront the audience with the fact that God and heaven, as construed in the New Testament, is nothing short of a "celestial dictatorship". He expects them to be taken aback by pressure of this revelation. What I don't think he really gets is how many of them are happy to picture God and heaven as a celestial dictatorship. They aren't repulsed by that idea at all. So the pressure he means to apply by it is completely effete. I wish Hitch would have gotten a firmer hold on that particular wrinkle in his polemic while he was alive. Most of the "flock" are overjoyed about the authoritarian nature of the idea of it all.

Hitchens articulated his point like no other that I have heard or read. I don't believe his argument was against people of genuine faith, rather than the exploitation of those people by so-called men of the cloth in the name of god. People like Joel Osteen and the like who are the antithesis of their own preaching. It's "pay-as-you-go salvation". Rubbish with it's own brand of vile stench.

The ‘truth’ of the resurrection doesn’t set me free. Newton’s theories do, and so would Einstein’s if I could understand them better. However, it should be said that Newton had to keep his beliefs to himself. No kidding, since he must inevitably have rejected the Trinity nonsense in his own mind; he had far too piercing an intellect to have been able to hold himself to that ridiculous suspension of logical physical principles. Newton and Einstein would have had tremendous fun listening to and debating Hitchens, although Hitchens would have had a huge problem keeping up with their understanding of physics and applied mathematics! I think Christopher would have had a massively Islamic moment in their presence, although I think they would have been too preoccupied debating their own applied mathematical concepts to have paid him much attention.
